Italy orders ChatGPT blocked citing data protection concerns, The Italian data protection authority has ordered OpenAI to stop processing people’s data locally immediately, citing concerns that the ChatGPT maker is breaching the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The regulator is investigating allegations that OpenAI unlawfully processed people’s data and failed to prevent minors from accessing the technology.
OpenAI has 20 days to respond to the order, with potential fines of up to 4% of annual turnover or €20 million if it fails to comply. Despite not having an EU-based legal entity, any data protection authority can intervene if it identifies risks to local users under GDPR regulations.
This comes after an open letter called for a pause in the development of more powerful generative AI models to allow regulators to catch up.
