Oscar Pistorius denied parole for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp a decade ago

Oscar Pistorius denied parole after serving half of his sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, according to South Africa’s prison authorities and the victim’s family lawyer on Friday.

Tania Koen, who represents the Steenkamp family, confirmed that the family opposed his bid and said parole has been denied, with the board reconvening in a year to reconsider.

The Department of Correctional Services issued a statement citing “incomplete minimum detention period” as the reason for the denial.

Pistorius, a former South African Paralympic star, fatally shot Steenkamp in his bathroom on Valentine’s Day in 2013, going from a public hero to a convicted murderer in a trial that gained worldwide attention.
